Bustling Devon Avenue has a bazaar-like atmosphere, offering an array of ethnic eateries and shops. The last time Yo’s truly caught up with Ald. Bernie Stone (50th) he was sitting in his neighborhood aldermanic office with a pin-up of Farrah Fawcett on the wall, weeks from celebrating his 33rd year in office. That was last year. The nine-term incumbent faces some serious competitors in the upcoming aldermanic elections, according to a Tribune story today, which gives a little background on Stone’s competitors.

Last summer when we visited the 50th ward, residents talked about such issues as the need to revitalize the ailing commercial strips of Touhy and Western avenues and address the lack of parking along Devon Avenue. At the time, aldermanic candidate Greg Brewer, director of community group Citizens for Responsible Development and an architect at Skidmore Owings and Merrill, claimed that planning in the neighborhood is ad hoc and lacks vision. We look forward to an interesting contest in this ward.

  • When Stone illegally installed 24 hour parking meters along Devon Avenue, it took Naisy Dolar to remove them. Naisy Dolar is a strong candidate in the 50th ward race. She is endorsed by the Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Tribune, Fraternal Order of Police and many others.

  • I’m pretty sure it took, umm, whaddya call ’em… Laws, that’s it – to remove those meters. Personally, I would’ve called Paul Newman. If you missed that reference, eat fifty hard-boiled eggs and think about it for an hour.

Naisy Dolar is a committed (if somewhat innefective) community activist but won’t be taken seriously in City Council meetings; she sounds really angry a lot of the time and has interesting ideas but no realistic plans. I look forward to a viable Asian American candidate making a run for Alderman in the 50th or elsewhere, but Naisy Dolar is not it.

Best of luck to all the candidates in taking as many votes from Bernie Stone as possible, and I hope whoever makes it to the runnoff will emerge victorious!!!

  • Stone Cold is Dead Wrong. That old “angry” thing is a condescending, sexist little trick that Stone and Brewer are both using to detract from Naisy, because she has gained so much attention and momentum. She was endorsed by both the Trib AND the Sun-Times!

Those who have no need to be jealous of Naisy note her for her energy and determination. Go Naisy Dolar–vote for #52 in the 50th ward on election day!

  • I don’t see how a comment about Naisy seeming angry is somehow condescending and sexist. And I certainly don’t see how this comment is related to Stone or Brewer. I haven’t heard, seen or gotten that they were spreading sexist propaganda at all.

In my opinion, the above Naisy supporter is pulling the same kind of political move Stone has for the past couple of elections. When he has a strong contender he implies that they are “anti-semetic”. So his logic is – because I’m Jewish and they’re criticizing my character and my experience – they must hate Jews.

In this same way this Naisy supporter is stating – because Brewer and Stone are men – running against a women – they must be sexist. Any comment they say is sexist. You can’t say anything critical about Naisy – or you’re a sexist. That’s just foolish.

I attended the Boone School Candidate Forum and I have to say – I did find Naisy to be screaming – or at least a cheerleader. And I have to agree – it seems like she brought enthusiasm and a rising voice – but she didn’t bring substance. On the contrary Brewer was grounded, indepth and sensible.

  • Mom in the 50th hit the nail on the head. If you want to elect the candidate with the best experience and the solid stances to bring our ward out of the “Stone Age” punch 53 for Greg Brewer.

Greg is an experienced proffesional who founded Citizens for Responsible Development, an organization that for the past two years has led the fight to bring responsible development to the 50th Ward. He is endorsed by the Chicago Federation of Labor, Democracy for America, Women’s Bar Association of Illinois, Citizen Action Illinois and many others!

    Vote Brewer! http://www.gregbrewer.org

  • Hi i am a 50th ward resident all my life & i think Bernie Stone has done an excellent job.
As for Naisy Dolar she is very cut throat & has very bad tactics as Bernie’s running mate.
I hope Naisy looses to Bernie big time!
