Are you feeling secure down in that garden apartment?

Our friend Steve’s garden apartment sits on a nice street in Lake View, but the fact that he considers the area safe doesn’t ease his anxiety a great deal. “There’s a big window next to my front door, so occasionally it crosses my mind that someone could swing a crowbar right through it.”

Steve says he isn’t as worried about being attacked as he is about someone stealing his stuff. His computer, CDs and DVD collection are right in front of the window, which is normally hidden behind closed blinds, he says, and the TV and stereo system in his front room aren’t too shabby either.

Sure, the rents tend to be good in the garden, but do you feel secure down there? We’d like to hear your stories of life in a garden apartment — and the steps tenants have taken to boost their comfort levels.
