A first look inside The Lofts at River East in Streeterville

If you pass by The Lofts at River East, 445 E Illinois in Streeterville, you’ll have only a few clues to the scale of construction that’s underway inside.

The conversion of the building into 285 loft apartments is far along, and occupancy is targeted for late this year.

At the time of my visit on a rainy Friday last week the demising walls and interior walls for the apartments were framed out, and rough plumbing and electrical fixtures were in place. There were scores of workers on the site.

The apartments will have a true loft aesthetic, with timber beams, exposed brick and ductwork and high ceilings.

New openings have been cut into the south side of the building for sliding glass doors that will open onto balconies overlooking the Ogden Slip. The view to the south will be more expansive than what I could see from a window opening.

North-facing units will overlook an adjacent park.

The Lofts at River East will have an extensive amenities suite, including an 8,000 square foot multi-level roof deck.

We’ll bring you more details as they become available.
