A moment of Zen at Chicago's Waterview Tower

jonbutcherBusinessman Jon Butcher is planning the mother of all makeovers when he moves into his penthouse at Waterview Tower in 2008. We’re not talking grades of granite or shades of Snaidero. Butcher is constructing a full-blown indoor Japanese garden which will snake through the penthouse, complete with a waterfall, a couple of ponds, granite boulders and black bamboo. “Woodland aromas” will be piped through the space, which will also feature computer-controlled mood lighting. Butcher tells us creating Japanese gardens is his passion because he loves their “serene aesthetic”, and he has already built three in other Chicago highrises, including the River North development Contemporaine.
“You walk in and see what looks like Kyoto, and behind it is the Sears Tower and Merchandise Mart, and it’s just surreal,” Butcher tells us. Portland-based Japanese garden designer Hoichi Kurisi will be on hand to help with the customization.
