A Wilmette home to control your morals and happiness

When it comes to pompous pronouncements, Chicago architects have many peers but few superiors. Consider this quote from John Shelette Van Bergen, a protégé of Frank Lloyd Wright:

Since the American architect has a great opportunity as a leader of the people toward honesty, simplicity and directness, he can educate their tastes and control, to a great extent, their morals and happiness.

Van Bergen designed many homes in the Chicago area, including several in Wilmette. His Bresbach House, on Michigan Ave, is on the National Register of Historic Places and sold for $7,250,000 in 2007.

Van Bergen’s James Irving House in Wilmette, built in 1928, just came on the market, priced at $1,095,000. The home is on a 100 x 175 lot at 1318 – 20 Isabella St, and includes 3 bedrooms, 2 ½ baths and a smaller free-standing 1-bedroom home that can be rented.

Koenig & Strey’s Jeanne Stogin has the listing.
