A host of urban planner wannabes are passionately bashing AMLI Residential‘s proposal for a two-tower 398-unit apartment complex on the southwest corner of Clark and Polk in the South Loop. Passion and attitude, they’re confident, trump whatever an experienced developer and architect might know about the site and the market.
You can follow the discussion at Curbed, sloopin and SkyscraperPage and find new posts and articles on the development at our Chicago Real Estate News page.

These are not the normal NIMBY asking for SF homes or 3 flats… They want more density and continuation of the street wall. Whats wrong with these two items in this location? Your turn Mr. Urban Planner.
Ak,
I’ll confess to lacking enough detailed knowledge of the site, the proposal, the cost issues and the market to express any opinion. I realize that makes me an outlier.
What do you mean when you say that commenters believe their opinions “trump” the developer’s and architect’s knowledge? That would make sense if people were calling on the alderman or plan commission to halt this project, but as far I can see (at least at Curbed) nobody is calling for government intervention that places opposition concerns over development insight and rights.
Evidently the developer doesn’t see a market for more units, so why would they build them?
Ben L,
You’re asking us to ignore the plain language of the following comments, among others at Curbed:
I mostly agree Joe. However, I am willing to bet that this proposed site plan (see link below) would not only cost the same to build, but would be just as profitable and would actually relate to the city better. Credit to Hayward for putting this diagram together:
