Patients who need to be near one of Chicago’s hospitals for highly specialized treatments such as follow-on care to a bone marrow transplant or dialysis often need an affordable place to stay, and their recovery is facilitated if their relatives can stay with them.
The IMD Guest House, 1933 W Polk St in the Medical District provides furnished apartments for patients and their families at $55 a night — or whatever they can afford to pay. More than half of patient stays are subsidized through a Hardship Fund made possible by generous donors.
The IMD Guest House has staff to assist patients in navigating the city and the medical system, and strive to make their stay as comfortable as possible.
The IMD Guest House is seeking to expand to 30 apartments from its current 16. It’s a 501 (c) (3) charity that needs donations of funds, furniture and volunteer time. The Room Place, a 100-year old family-owned local furniture recently helped out with a donation of recliners, a furniture item that adds greatly to patient comfort.
