Some dazzling views of Chicago’s skyline and the Chicago Spire.

I look forward to this building going up. I suspect some of the more pretentious folks will simply call it the “Calatrava”.
As for the doomsayers who say it won’t sell, time will tell. It may be in Chicago, but I suspect it is not in the “Chicago market”. It may be a market unto itself consisting largely of the filthy rich and their egos. I hope so. I certainly can’t afford to buy there.
Whether it sells well or not, this will only help Chicago. It makes the city still feel young and forward looking, and it puts us back on the list of “world class” cities. I don’t know if the interiors will be as good as the images the Spire shows on the website, but if you are looking to spend on an upper end unit, how could you choose anywhere else? I wonder if someone like Zell or Ken Griffin will get the penthouse?
Does anyone know how many units have sold since the opening last week?
It has been reported on the skyscraper page forums by someone who visited the sales center that the penthouse has been purchased by a local billionare who was not named. They also learned that the very tip top of the spire would be a two floor 360 degree view “meditation room”…
Zell.. is a very smart realestate investor, I doubt he would ever spend $40,000,000.00 on a 10,000sqft penthouse. He is know as paying pennies on the dollar for commeerical realestate. He might buy it for 10 million if it went to foreclosre. No condo has ever sold for anything in that range. Trump couldn’t sell his $25 million dollar penthouse. The palmolive building couldnt sell its $23 million dollar penthouse. I dont know why people keep insisting that rich people will pay anything regardless of price. $750,000.00 for a 500 sq.ft. studio on the second floor over looking a double decked expressway (LSD) in a so-so location. Someone needs to explain the value in that. I don’t get this project for a value standpoint.
valasko,
The value’s in the diversity of your neighbors.
Just think of the possibilities with 1,200 units in the building.
You’ll be able to ride the elevator with a crack crack dealer, a tier-one Russian who’s “in business,” a diamond smuggler, a pair of Latin American flight capital specialists, a disbarred bankruptcy scammer and a dude who says he’s Mossad but traffics in Thai tweenagers. In short, the elite of global capitaism. There’ll also be half a dozen guys from Omaha who cashed in a few shares of their Berkshire Hathaway winnings for a weekend swinger pad.
And a source close to Helen Shiller hints she’s saving up to buy irishpirate a “stewedio” to get him out of Uptown.
Who’ll buy at The Spire? The prospects are endless, and all have their own perception of value.
Oh that “stewedio” comment is amusing. Highrise living ain’t for me. Wouldn’t matter if I was as rich as Warren Buffet himself.
I grew up in a 1300 square foot house with a total of seven people. Give me anything more than that and I am happy. Put it a block from the lakefront and I would be happier.
Anything more than 2500 square feet for one person, I live alone(for obvious reasons), would upset my fragile equilibrium. Hell, now I have a third bedroom I seldom venture into.
As for the Spire my guess is that it will sell well to the out of town rich. They are looking for prestige and Trump and the Palmolive don’t have the prestige of this building.
I may be wrong. Perhaps it won’t sell well. I don’t have a ball of crystal.
I still look forward to this building gracing the skyline.
Whoever buys it, you’ll be riding those elevators alone. I suspect at least half of the units will be owned by people who stay in them a few weeks out of the year, tops.
