Emporis‘ editors have named Aqua the best skyscraper of 2009, according to the Tribune’s Blair Kamin.

The Jeanne Gang-designed, Magellan-built tower at 225 N Columbus Dr received 86 points in the poll, 25 more than its closest competitor. The Trump International Tower & Hotel Chicago squeaked into the top five with 36 votes.

  • That video is intense! I wouldn’t consider myself scared of heights, but some of those shots look like you are going to fall right off the edge.

    I’ll have to check with Magellan on the latest sales stats. The building was about 95 percent under contract going into ’09. A lot of closings were delayed this winter due to some snags with financing, but Magellan was able to round up some portfolio lenders, so that may not be as much of a problem now.

    Aqua’s roof wasn’t too bad. Can’t speak for anyone else in our group, but the railing around the top was high enough to make me feel pretty secure. Our trips to the top of Legacy and 235 Van Buren were a little more nerve-wracking, just because the barriers were little more than two-by-fours.
