Berwyn’s campaign to attract gay residents, which we’ve mentioned before, becomes easier to understand once you take a closer look at Berwyn’s schools. They’re a major barrier to moving there for families who have other options.
Berwyn South District 100’s elementary schools would be considered subpar by many parents, and have failed to make adequate yearly progress. District 100 schools do score higher than Berwyn North District 98 schools.
Berwyn’s Morton West high school is on academic watch, had a composite ACT score of 17.8 (below the 34th percentile), and graduated only 77.6% of its seniors.

I don’t get it. Are you saying gays don’t have kids and all straight people do? Silly.
Lee,
I didn’t say any such thing. You’d have to be living in a cave to be unaware that there are gay families with children.
But gay households are statistically far less likely than straight households to include kids. And, again by the stats, gay families tend to be affluent and not drawn to areas like Berwyn. There are, obviously, exceptions.
Joe, what statistics are those? Last I saw, gay men made, on average, 12% less than straight men, gay couple, then, would probably be similarly poorer (though two males might make more than a male-female couple), with gay women far behind…
Sheridan B,
I’m relyng on memory fumes only, from data supplied by local gay publications half a dozen years ago. I don’t have solid, current stats to back up what I said.
Joe – I’d be suspicious of any stats from local gay publications, firstly, they’re slanted towards advertisers and secondly, to give a “proud” perspective on the community, but more damning, they might be way off, due to, much as I hate to say it, poor research. It’s my understanding, in addition, that it’s been hard to compile accurate stats on the gay community overall.
