Berwyn seeks new crop of young homeowners

WBEZ reports on a campaign by the city of Berwyn to attract Chicagoans from neighborhoods like Roscoe Village and Wicker Park (thanks to Nina for the tip). The goal isn’t to boost Berwyn’s population, but rather to draw “more upscale folks,” according to the report. That’s a delicate balance in a city with rapidly growing black and Latino populations.

We did a quick scan of the Tribune‘s listings for single-family homes in Berwyn, and saw a range of good-looking bungalows (which dominate the housing stock) in the low to mid-$200s. Those are some nice prices by Chicago standards, and if you look at Berwyn on a map, it’s closer to downtown than some outlying city neighborhoods.

If any Yo-ers out there head regularly to Berwyn, I’d be interested in getting your take on whether it has substantial appeal to first-time buyers. Is it close enough? Hip enough? Cheap enough? Too cheap?
