BigLaw attorney abodes – OneEleven apartments

The life of a BigLaw attorney consists of lengthy workdays, working weekends and frequent travel.

I lived the BigLaw life for five years. If I were starting out in it today, I’d likely choose to live in a full-amenity high-rise a short walk from work and from a vibrant restaurant, nightlife and theater scene. Proximity to the CTA Blue and Orange Lines would be a plus but not a must-have, since cabs and limos will often provide a faster tip to and from the airport.

OneEleven, a luxury apartment tower fronting the Chicago River, is a short walk from the local offices of a number of Chicago’s largest law firms. The dense dining and nightlife scene in River North begins on the opposite side of the river, and the downtown Theatre District is just to the south.

Score bonus points for Riverwalk access across the street and Blue and Orange Line stops a short block south.

There’s an old saying that you rent for the life you want to live rather than the one you actually live. OneEleven’s lavish amenities satisfy a BigLaw attorney’s fantasy of having the leisure to enjoy them. Real life: you’ll likely have time only for the indoor pool and fitness center, and the occasional 2 AM visit to one of the outdoor terraces to see whose office lights are still lit.

The offices of Foley & Lardner (321 N Clark), Jenner & Block (353 N Clark) and Kirkland & Ellis (300 N LaSalle) are just across the river from OneEleven. Jones Day and McGuire Woods are one door east at 77 W Wacker, and Winston & Strawn is a few doors further east at 35 W Wacker. DLA Piper (203 N LaSalle) and Hinshaw & Culbertson (222 N LaSalle) are a block west of OneEleven. That’s a sampler, not an exhaustive list.

Bonus points: a lateral move from one BigLaw firm to another might not require a residence change.

Floor plans and near real-time rent and availability info for OneEleven can be accessed online.
