BigLaw attorney abodes, the new 73 East Lake apartments

Every BigLaw attorney can look forward to a succession of lengthy workdays and working weekends punctuated by frequent travel.

I lived the BigLaw life for five years and lived in Lincoln Park. If I were starting out in it today, I’d be tempted to opt for a full-amenity high-rise a short walk from work and from a vibrant restaurant, nightlife and theater scene. Proximity to the CTA Blue Line would be a plus but not a must-have, since cabs and limos often provide a faster trip to and from the airport.

The new 73 East Lake apartment tower is a short walk from the local offices of many of Chicago’s largest law firms. The dense dining and nightlife scene in River North begins a few short blocks to the north, the downtown Theatre District is just west of the building, and Millennium Park is just around the corner.

Score bonus points for Riverwalk access a block north and a nearby Chicago Pedway connection to the Blue Line to O’Hare Airport.

The fitness facilities at 73 East Lake are built on a scale that’s unexpected in a boutique building.

There are three fitness rooms, a large indoor pool, a sculptural whirlpool and a steam room and sauna.

The 9th floor and rooftop lounge areas and decks are impressively spacious.

BigLaw offices within a 10-minute or shorter walk of 73 Est Lake include: Baker & McKenzie (300 E Randolph), Foley & Lardner (321 N Clark), Jenner & Block (353 N Clark), Kirkland & Ellis (300 N LaSalle), Hinshaw & Culbertson (222 N LaSalle), Vedder Price (222 N LaSalle), DLA Piper (203 N LaSalle), Jones Day (77 W Wacker), McGuire Woods (77 W Wacker), Winston & Strawn (35 W Wacker), K&L Gates (70 W Madison), Chapman & Cutler (111 W Monroe), Holland & Knight (131 S Dearborn), Latham & Watkins (330 N Wabash) and Sidley & Austin (1 S Dearborn), to name a few.

Score bonus points for water taxi access from Michigan Avenue to many law offices at the west edge of the Loop. Chicago Water Taxi commuter service began March 30, and Shoreline service starts in May.

Additional bonus points: a lateral move from one BigLaw firm to another might not require a residence change.

73 East Lake is pet-friendly and has a private dog run. The building has convertible, 1- and 2-bedroom, 2-bath apartments available for immediate occupancy. Floor plans and contact information are available online.
