Building a bridge between K2 and Jewel

The short walk from K2’s luxury apartments to the Jewel-Osco is about to get shorter.

Fifield Companies will erect a bridge over Union Avenue connecting K2 Apartments and the Jewel – Osco on Des Plaines St. This will create a private access for residents of the luxury apartment building from the building’s pool deck directly to the grocery store.

“It took more than two years to bring this to fruition, but we persevered because this is an incredible benefit for our residents,” said Randy Fifield, principal and vice chair of Fifield. “Residents of K2 have come to expect the best amenities and this new bridge adds yet another convenience to K2’s luxury lifestyle.”

The approximately 105-foot bridge will be an open-air structure that connects the Jewel – Osco parking deck to an outdoor area adjacent to K2’s pool deck. K2 residents have access to this bridge and will have electric key access to enter gates at both ends. Once the bridge is erected this week, it will take another six-to-eight weeks of installation of special side panels and floor treads before residents can use it in March.

“It’s been extremely cold in Chicago this winter and the bridge will shorten our residents’ walk to their neighborhood grocery store substantially on those frigid days,” said Steve Fifield, chairman and CEO. “Right now our residents have to exit the K2 lower lobby at Kinzie Street, walk up Kinzie to Des Plaines Street, turn right and walk up Des Plaines to the Jewel Osco entrance and back. The round trip from the main lobby to Jewel and back is about 500 steps each way versus 200 steps from the K2 deck across the new bridge to the Jewel Osco entrance. When you’re carrying groceries, this makes the trip much shorter.”

K2, a 496-unit luxury apartment project, opened in March of 2013 and is currently 70 percent leased.

Note: This post has been edited to reflect date changes due to extreme weather conditions. The bridge is now scheduled to be lifted into place during the week beginning February 9.
