Checkerboard finds new home in Hyde Park

The owner of the legendary Checkerboard Lounge, where everyone from Muddy Waters to Mick Jagger has taken the stage, plans to reopen the South Side club in Hyde Park in November.

The Checkerboard lost its previous home, at 423 E. 43rd, after the city declared it unsafe. The new space, at 52nd and Harper, is owned by the University of Chicago. Also in Harper Court, restaurateur Jerry Kleiner, the force behind Red Light, Opera, Marche and other hotspots, is opening Harper Grille, a 5,000-square-foot eatery.
