Checking out Helmut Jahn's glass in Streeterville

600 North Fairbanks Yesterday, Yo reader Bryan commented that famed architect Helmut Jahn should get a crack at designing something modern to replace the Lake Shore Athletic Club, so we thought we’d take a look at the progress workers have made on Jahn’s hotly anticipated 600 North Fairbanks. The building has reached its full height of 41 stories, and about three-fourths of the glass veneer has been applied. We know residents love their outdoor space, but am I the only one who thinks this building would look a lot more graceful without those inset balconies pocking its smooth, translucent face? Still, it’s hard to argue (though we’re sure some of you might) that Fairbanks is the most stylish high-rise under construction now. What do yo’all think — will Jahn’s design do what marketers promised it would and “set the bar for the 21st century”? Twelve units, priced from the $430s to $1.6 million, remain for sale at the development.
