Our last post on the new development Rainbo Village, 4836 N Clark St, pointed out the great location in Uptown. We didn’t mention that it sits across the street from St Boniface Cemetery, just up the road from the even larger Graceland Cemetery. While some at Yo argue that this is a plus (quieter than living across from a park but still plenty of green space and possibly more sunlight), I just can’t set aside the whole creep factor. When my girlfriend and I stumbled across an awesome apartment near this same cemetery, she summed up her reservations quite nicely with, “You want me to sleep across the street from dead people? No way. This is a definite deal breaker.”

Live across from a cemetery and want to shout out the positives or negatives (or just the ghost stories)? Can’t imagine a peaceful life so close to eternal slumber, or can’t imagine a better buffer for urban life? Click on “Comments” and weigh in.

  • a friend used to live on argyle and his fourth floor back porch looked out across st. boniface cemetery – sitting out there with a few beers and watching the night take hold over the headstones was one of his favorite ways to relax, and i tried to join him as often as i could. we always seemed to have our most interesting conversations on that porch – something about the reverent silence across the alley, i think.

  • I would be more freaked out about the bodies that were found when knocking down the previous Rainbo structure than the bodies that are across the street.

  • Well, for one thing you won’t have to worry about future developments blocking your view past the cemetary. On the other hand, you also won’t have to worry about parks, schools, businesses or anything else being built on the cemetery grounds. Which means that the lack of noise factor is a definite plus. At the same time, I guess it just depends how close exactly you are to that cemetery. Don’t think I’d want to fall asleep, much less wake up, regularly, to the sight of tombstones just outside my bedroom window.
