Chicago developer awarded for contribution to city

websterplaceIn the eyes of the general public, real estate developers usually rate somewhere down near journalists and used-car salesmen in a ranking of occupations by their reputation for integrity (we can say this because we’re journalists).

But the Commercial Forum, a division of the Chicago Association of Realtors apparently disagrees, and has started handing out an annual “Impact” award to developers it says have improved the quality of life in Chicago.

This year’s recipient is David W. “Buzz” Ruttenberg, chairman and CEO of Belgravia Group. Ruttenberg was recently recognized for transforming an industrial pocket of the city at West Webster Ave and North Clybourn Ave into a vibrant area and encouraging residential growth by redeveloping the old Butternut Bread factory site into Webster Place Shopping Center, a commercial development that includes a book store, movie theaters and a bank.

Forum spokesperson Shadia Shukair says Ruttenberg was also recognized for philanthropy and support of a local school and hospital and Northwestern University’s School of Law.

So we want to hear from you – can you name a developer – or used-car salesman – who you think has contributed positively to the city at large?
