Chicago gangs tracked on Google maps

The blog Gapers Block today spotlights a new use for Google maps: locating Chicago gangs. The Web site ChicagoGangs.org has interactive maps of the North and South Sides of the city, sprinkled with little red arrows pointing to gang territory (apparently, I live among the Almighty Latin Kings). It’s a nifty feature, but I wonder about how reliable the information is, since the site doesn’t say much about its methodology.

If you want to track crime using hip interactive maps, try ChicagoCrime.org, which has an amazingly thorough database of crime searchable by type, location, etc. And there’s always the Chicago Police Department’s Web site.
