Chicago rent barometer: apartments for under $600

Lincoln Square Studio

What exactly can $600 rent you these days? For those willing to put their bed and table in the same room and live in a studio, the choice of neighborhoods is actually pretty varied.

There’s a studio at 4613-19 N Lincoln Ave (photograph above) that’s renting for $585 and is located above commerical space in the heart of Lincoln Square, meaning that even if your apartment is small, your entertainment options are vast.

If you scour the ads hard enough, you might even stumble across a studio in Lake View for under $600. There are a few studios at 534 W Wellington Ave that start at $580, and a few efficiencies at 640 W Briar St that will cost you $575 a month.

Of course, if you’re willing to move away from the nightlife a bit, and live below ground, your rent can dip below $500. A garden studio at 7554 N Claremont Ave in Rogers Park is renting for only $495 a month.

Just something to think about the next time your roommate leaves her dirty dishes in the sink, or invites another round of long-lost friends to crash on the couch.
