Chicago rent barometer: Edgewater apartments

Here at Yo headquarters, there are no shortage of Edgewater fans, but how much does it cost to rent an apartment in this lake-hugging neighborhood of babies, puppies and block parties?

5528 N Kenmore AveAt The Brittany, 5528 N Kenmore Ave, $725 a month rents you a 475-square-foot one-bedroom apartment. The listing describes this as a “2.5 room” one-bedroom apartment but, looking at the floor plan, we’re having a hard time figuring out where that other half-room is. The tiny kitchen? The bathroom? Or maybe each of those counts as a quarter room and combined they form an additonal half? (Studios in the same building are $525 to $626 per month). And why would you even describe an apartment this way?

At Ridge Avenue and Ardmore Avenue, $950 a month rents you a two-bedroom with some condo-y features, including granite countertops, dark hardwood floors, central air conditioning, and a lovely red living room wall. Ok, that’s not a condo feature but we are fans of the bold color (renters are too often stuck with boring white walls).

At 1340 W Granville Ave, $1,195 a month rents you a three-bedroom apartment in a six-flat. No mention of a bathroom count leaves us thinking there’s only one. The ad goes to great lengths to describe the ornate hutch and built-in bookshelves, but we must say we’re put off when people don’t tidy the kitchen before snapping pictures for an ad.
