Chicago rent barometer: Far West Side

1500 block of North Harding Avenue, West Humboldt Park

What does your rental buck buy on the Far West Side? We looked over a few listings to give you a snapshot view:

– For $1,200, you can rent a new-construction three-bedroom two-bath condo at 4203 W Gladys Ave in West Garfield Park. Everything in the unit is new, according to a Craigslist ad. The also unit features hardwood floors in the living areas with berber carpeting in the bedrooms. Security and intercom systems, along with gated parking in the rear of the building, may allay some potential tenants’ fears about safety in the neighborhood. The unit is close to the CTA’s Green Line, and the landlord accepts Section 8 vouchers.

– For $1,298, you can get yourself a rehabbed two-bedroom 1.5-bath apartment near North and Kedzie avenues in West Humboldt Park. As described in a Craigslist ad, the apartment seems like standard vintage Chicago fare: it has hardwood floors, 9.5-foot ceiling heights and bay windows. There’s a small room suitable for an office in addition to the bedrooms, the ad notes. The appliances are new and heat, hot water and laundry are included in the rent. Garage parking available, but the ad doesn’t specify the cost.

– For $1,600 a month, you can get a five-bedroom 1.5-bath duplex at 717 N Lockwood Ave in Austin. Though this Craigslist ad doesn’t say much about the features, it does note that the paint and carpet are new. The unit also features traditional finishes like a fireplace and separate living and dining rooms. The apartment has central heat and air, and one parking space is included in the rent.
