Chicago rent barometer: living by the lake

1206 W Jarvis

As the winds howling across Lake Michigan begin to lose their punishing chill, the idea of renting along Chicago’s lakefront looks more and more appealing. We tested the waters of the city’s rental market from north to south and came up with these three options.

– For $1,450, you can rent this two-bedroom condo at 1206 W Jarvis Ave in Rogers Park. A Craigslist ad promises lake views from most of the windows and the chance to “sleep to the sound of the surf.” A photo (above) shows a vintage Chicago building with hardwood floors, ample windows and walls painted a sunny shade of yellow. The unit features a washer, dryer and dishwasher. Heat and satellite TV are included with the rent.

– This 500-square-foot convertible apartment is tucked away on the top floor of The Park Lincoln, a 15-story high-rise at 2470 N Clark St in Lincoln Park. The unit has lake views, and the building is a block from the lakefront. The $1,170-per-month rent gets you a few amenities: evening door staff, a laundry room and a bike room. The apartment is decked out with a dishwasher and a built-in microwave. French doors separate the living area from the bedroom. Covered parking is available for $195, and uncovered parking is $165.

– Some of the units in the Poinsetta Apartments, a vintage high-rise at 5528 S Hyde Park Blvd, have lake views, according to a Craigslist ad. A studio apartment currently available for $615 per month appears from photos to have a distant view of the lake through a couple of high-rise buildings. But a walk to the lakefront is just a little more than two blocks, and The University of Chicago and sprawling Jackson Park are also within walking distance. Utilities are included in the rent.
