Chicago rent barometer: the Northwest Side

Portage Park Theater

Unless you fly out of O’Hare every other day, or hop on I-90 to commute to the ‘burbs, the Northwest Side doesn’t have too much to reccomend it in terms of location. Still, the area’s emerging reputation as a family-friendly place means that rents are starting to swell. Here are three options at a range of prices:

-For $800, you can rent a garden apartment at Cicero and Addison. A Craigslist ad describes the one-bedroom unit as spacious, but mentions few details.

-For $1,200, you can get a two-bedroom one-bath apartment near Kedzie and Wilson. The apartment has a gourmet kitchen with granite counters, stainless steel appliances, a dishwasher and a microwave. The living room is a sizeable 14 by 20 feet, and the unit as a whole encompasses 1,000 square feet. The apartment also has hardwood floors, wooden blinds and washer and dryer hook-ups. The Kedzie el stop is one block away.

-For $1,250, this two-bedroom one-bath apartment at 5339 W Montrose Ave can be yours. Nevermind that you’ll have to pay the heating bills, this apartment has hardwood floors and stained glass windows. And it’s 1,600 square feet. Another plus is an enclosed back porch that can be used for a third bedroom. An indoor parking space is included with the rent.
