Chicago rent barometer: walk to work from River North

strolling past Rainforest Cafe

River North might be a good place to camp out while the CTA tries to sort itself out over the next two years – the neighborhood is walking distance to much of downtown. It’s also home to some of the city’s best gastronomical experiences and offers easy access to the Mag Mile. But living there is going to cost you a pretty penny.

For $1,450, you can rent this junior one-bedroom one-bath apartment on the river. The pool, library and 24-hour fitness center in this full-amenity building might take the sting out of renting a place described in a Craiglist ad as “ideal for single living.” (We assume that means it’s on the small side.)

– For $2,500, you can lease this two-bedroom two-bath apartment near the intersection of Wabash Avenue and Illinois Street. The rehabbed unit includes stainless steel appliances, granite counters and a dishwasher. The remodeled bathroom features a Jacuzzi and an ultra-sleek vessel sink. The unit also has in-unit washer and dryer. The full-amenity building includes a media room, exercise room, pool and door staff. Parking is available for an additional $100 per month.

– For a jaw-dropping $9,500 per month, you can lease this five-bedroom five-bath single-family home on the 400 block of West Huron . Although its granite counters might seem ho-hum in today’s market, the gourmet chef’s kitchen features a top-of-the-line Sub-Zero refrigerator and a stainless steel Wolf oven range. All five of the bathrooms feature marble. The living room has an actual wood-burning fireplace – none of that gas-flame nonsense. This luxury castle-in-the-city also features four private terraces and a two-car garage. Film afficianados will be happy to hear that there’s a projection room.
