Chicago rent barometer: what's affordable in Woodlawn

Woodlawn graystone, at intersection of 63rd and Evans

Our post yesterday about new condos in Woodlawn sparked some spirited debate about whether development in the area is providing enough affordable housing. So we thought we’d take a look at a couple of wallet-friendly rentals in the neighborhood.

– For $1,100, you can rent this three-bedroom one-bath apartment at 63rd and Evans. The historic graystone features new ceramic tile and stainless steel appliances in the kitchen. The unit also features Pergo floors in the main living areas and new Berber carpeting in the bedrooms. The total living area is approximately 900 square feet – pretty compact – and only street parking is available. On the plus side, the unit has a new furnace and central air, and the building has a coin-operated laundry room. It’s also close to the Green Line and a short car ride from the The University of Chicago.

– For a $1,200, you can lease this three-bedroom two-bath apartment at 1424 E 65th Place. A Craigslist ad touts the formal dining room, hardwood floors and 2,000 square feet of space. The unit includes a washer and dryer hook-up.

– For $1,200, this two-bedroom one-bath renovated condo at 6654 S University Ave can be yours. In the kitchen, new features include stainless steel appliances and granite counters. The new conversion also features hardwood floors throughout the living area. The new bathroom has marble bathroom tiles and a Jacuzzi tub. Although you have to leave your unit to do laundry, the facilities are in the building. Heat is included in the rent. The owner accepts Section 8 vouchers.
