There’s no single website that’s best for Chicago apartment searches of all types.
There is, however, one that stands out if you’re limiting your search to larger apartment complexes along the lakefront. You’ll find the most complete coverage of this type of property at Apartments.com, a national site owned by a group of major newspapers.
The listings at Apartments.com typically include pictures, floor plans, and information about the types of units available and their rent range. You’ll also find links to management company websites, and we recommend that you go directly to those websites when you’re interested in a property. The “Check availability” link on Apartments.com doesn’t give you real-time info on the types and prices of units that are actually available, but many of the management company websites do.
Limit what you’re looking at on Apartments.com to properties that are tagged as being advertised by the management company. The rental services that we call bedbugs have been actively spamming the site with junk listings tagged “By owner” when the advertiser is not the owner of the property.
Disclosure: The Tribune Company, our largest customer, is one of the owners of Apartments.com.
