We define Chicago’s “near west” neighborhoods to include the West Loop, Fulton River District and River West. You’ll find all of your major apartment options in these neighborhoods on our at-a-glance list of downtown apartments.
Our goal is to help you find the apartment that best fits your needs. Renters simply have so many differing priorities – and budget constraints – that singling out an overall best building would be a pointless exercise.
Our first post in this series spotlighted the buildings with the best views.
We recognize that some of you are indifferent to proximity to grocery stores because you do most of your shopping online via Peapod, or rely on Whole Foods’ personal shopper / delivery service – or eat out or order in for almost all of your meals.
It doesn’t get any more convenient, especially in harsh weather, than being able to grocery shop without leaving your building.
Residents at Presidential Towers can access the on-site Walmart Neighborhood Market via the building’s internal arcade. As a bonus, Presidential Towers residents have key fob access to the Walmart after its normal business hours.
Echelon at K Station, Trio and K2 come in a close second in this category. What’s perhaps the city’s best Jewel-Osco is directly across the street from Echelon, across a parking lot from Trio, and will shortly be accessible from K2 via an elevated footbridge.
Arkadia will also be in the running when it opens. It’s just a short block south of the West Loop Mariano’s.

You’ll find links to our objective, visually-rich apartment reviews of near west buildings, and links to near real-time availability checks for most of the buildings, at our downtown apartments at-a-glance list, and some tips and advice at our Guide to renting in Chicago’s near west neighborhoods.
We’ve also spotlighted the best apartments in River North, Streeterville and the South Loop.
