City closer to approving Wal-Mart

A Chicago City Council committee approved a zoning change this week that would allow for the controversial development of a Wal-Mart store on the West Side.
Supporters, including Mayor Richard Daley, say the area could use the jobs and affordable retail the store would bring. Critics say Wal-Mart should be kept out of Chicago for its anti-union policies and its effect on smaller businesses.

Another proposal to build a Wal-Mart on the South Side will be reviewed by the City Council on May 5.
