If you buy a house or anything else with your heart, you’ll likely overspend. Its best to take the time to run the numbers first. If a fierce bidding war erupts over a particular house, the “winner” probably paid way too much.
Some time back I asked Focus Development’s Tim Anderson (video) what advice a savvy developer gives his daughter when she’s buying a condo. His answer is similar to Eric’s advice: “First be in love with it.”
