Concept vs. execution: Chess Lofts

Chess Lofts

Chess Lofts, the 119-unit South Loop conversion at 320 E 21st St, is looking very different from when we first posted construction photos on Yo back in 2006. Since then, the steel fire escapes have come down and those industrial-looking opaque windows have been taken out and replaced with inset balconies and larger and clearer windows.

Even the color of the brick seems to have brightened up quite a bit (although that probably has something to do with the different cameras that were used). The glass brick at ground level is one of the few vestiges of the building’s past.

When I posted a sales update in May, 17 one-bedrooms starting in the $210s and 29 two-bedroom starting in the $260 were available. Below are a few images of (from left to right) a rendering of the project, construction in 2006, and closer shots of those old windows and the current balconies.
