The upscale food market Fox & Obel at 401 E. Illinois St. (312-410-7301) in Streeterville is now offering free valet parking, effectively solving one of the neighborhood’s long-unanswered questions: Where in the hell do you park?
Fox & Obel offers free, 90-minute validated parking at the AMC Theatres Public Self-Park down the block, but nothing beats hopping out at the curb and flipping your keys to a red-coated valet–even if you’re still driving an AMC (that’s: American Motors Corporation, not the movie theatre chain) Gremlin.
To valet at Fox & Obel, pull up to the southeast corner of Illinois and McClurg. Then, walk like a big shot all the way to the produce section.
Unless a new highrise is arising, 90-minute free parking for Fox & Obel customers is available directly across the street from the main entrance. This is a surface lot located at the northeast corner of Illinois and McClurg Court.
Speaking of rising (apologies for the stretch segue), Fox & Obel has the best bread in Chicago. Baked fresh daily, at the store. A slice of heaven can be yours for a pittance — or this being Fox & Obel, you can receive your pittance and bread in exchange for your Hamilton.
There is a new highrise rising! The Parkview — luxury condos, of course. I stopped in to get my bread fix at Fox & Obel today and was surprised to find the parking lot gone. The checkout person said that the lot was closed on January 3rd.
I did not try the valet parking although there were three bored and quite friendly valet parkers on duty this Sunday morning. Limited street parking is available on the west side of McClurg Ct. with 15-minute blinker parking for about 20 cars. Most shoppers seemed to be taking advantage of the street parking.
90-minute self-parking is indeed available at the AMC Theatres down the block (west on Illinois), but that is hardly a convenient option. Save time and shoe leather and self-park on the street if there is space, or use the valet.
