Condos replacing DeMar's Coffee Shop in East Village

DeMar's Development
We knew it wouldn’t be long before the building that used to house DeMar’s Coffee Shop on Chicago Avenue and Paulina Street was replaced with another West Town condo development. Adrian Homes plans to demolish the building at 1701 W Chicago Ave and replace it with two-bedroom two-bath condominiums. The units will include granite countertops, hardwood floors, decks, indoor parking and master bedroom suites, according to Adrian’s Web site. No word on what they’ll cost yet, but “preconstruction pricing” is being advertised.

Let’s hope these won’t be as cookie cutter as everything else going up on the street seems to be. Adrian could take a step in that direction by preserving the vintage sign and calling the project “DeMar’s Condos.” Go ahead and laugh, but a certain Printers Row loft building sits behind a piece of found architecture on which another vintage restaurant sign was preserved. There’s a free YoChicago tee shirt in it for the first one to tell us what that sign says and name the loft building behind it. Click on “Comments” below.
