Designing your week: all night in the Loop, all day at the river

This weekend ought to be great for insomniacs. As you’re no doubt aware, Looptopia kicks off this Friday – the overnight festival in the Loop with a packed schedule of events featuring everything from break dancing to bands to morning yoga. It’s meant to showcase the Loop as an around-the-clock entertainment destination.

We’ve expressed some skepticism about the claim that the Loop has become an honest-to-goodness “24-hour downtown,” but given the amount of residential development in the area it may be on its way. It’ll be interesting to see the Loop bustling in the wee hours.

If you’re too hopped-up on caffeine or adrenaline to go home after Looptopia ends Saturday morning, you might wander over to Chicago River Day, which kicks off at 9 a.m. at 60 sites along the river’s banks stretching from Route 120 in Lake County to Blue Island in Cook County.

Your morning of hard work cleaning up trash, pulling weeds and creating “river-inspired art” will be rewarded by a festival with canoe rides and a free barbecue at River Park, 5100 N Franscisco in Chicago.
