dogJust how pet-friendly can a highrise condo be? Dog-ownership is common in highrise-happy neighborhoods like the South Loop and developers often tout dog runs as part of the amenities package of their building. Some, like 740 Fulton in the West Loop, are even starting to offer the services of dog walkers to time-starved professionals.

We want to hear from highrise dwellers with dogs. Just how big are these dog runs, and can an animal actually break out into a pant on one of them?Does having a dog-run in the building make a pet-owner less inclined to take their dog to the park? Are some breeds more suited to highrises than others? We think the city should provide more off-leash areas in parks.

  • i have a 30 pound beagle/german shepherd mix who’s not only the cutest dog i’ve ever known, but also about the biggest dog i could imagine in a high-rise (i’m in a 7 floor apartment building with no dog run). thankfully, we have a leashless exercise area around the corner (challenger bark, i think it’s called, in buena park). there’s a couple down the hall from me that has two large dobermans, and while they’re good dogs, i bet their legs get cramped in that tiny apartment all day.

after dealing with the frustration of searching for a quality apartment that allows dogs repeatedly in the last five years, i’m glad to see that condos are starting to accomodate dog people.
