1509 Hinman is a 3-story, 33-unit courtyard apartment building at 1509 Hinman Ave in Evanston.

The handsome brick and limestone building was completed in 1923 and has been recently remodeled. The elaborate limestone detailing on the building’s façade was a contributing factor to its listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

The apartments

1509 Hinman has a mix of 1- and 2-bedroom, 1-bath apartments. Floor plans are available online. In mid-December 2014 rents started at $1,895.


The apartments have bright, spacious living rooms with hardwood floors and large windows. Vintage trim includes built-up crown, baseboard and chair rail moldings.


The apartments have a separate dining area. Updated galley kitchens have a decent amount of cabinet and counter space, gas ranges and dishwashers.


Apartments have a foyer and hall, with built-ins, that separates the living and bedroom areas. Bedrooms have hardwood floors.

Baths have been updated.

Amenities, services, policies

1509 Hinman has limited amenities, but more than you’ll find in many vintage buildings of its size.


The building has a fitness room and a laundry room.

There’s a bicycle storage room and there are resident storage lockers.

A limited amount of parking is available on-site. Cats are welcome, dogs aren’t. Heat is included in the rent.

The location

1509 Hinman is in a solid edge-of-downtown location, close to shopping, bars, restaurants, coffee shops, public transportation and Lake Michigan parks.

1509 Hinman is a few blocks from the Northwestern University campus.

Shopping. 1509 Hinman has good proximity to retail shops in downtown Evanston.

Whole Foods, the nearest full-service grocery, is two blocks northwest on Chicago Ave.

Sea Ranch Fish Market is about a six-minute walk south of 1509 Hinman. Jewel-Osco and Trader Joe’s are just over a half-mile south on Chicago Ave.


Downtown Evanston offers an eclectic mix of locally-owned boutiques and name-brand retailers..

Residents of 1509 Hinman who are setting up their first apartment will find much of what they need at Lemoi Ace Hardware and Affordable Portables a few blocks from the building.

The upscale Westfield Old Orchard shopping center, anchored by Macy’s, Bloomingdales and Nordstrom, is accessible by a bus route that stops just outside the building.

Dining, nightlife, entertainment. There are dozens of restaurants and bars within a few blocks of 1509 Hinman.


If highly-caffeinated is your preferred state of being, you won’t have to go far to maintain it. Kafein, Other Brothers, Peet’s and Starbucks are nearby.


There’s an abundance and variety of restaurants near 1509 Hinman, including Addis Abeba, Giordano’s, Edzo’s, Trattoria Demi and Tapas Barcelona, to name just a few.

Wine aficionados look forward to the twice-weekly tastings at Vinic Wine, a block east of 1509 Hinman.


Downtown Evanston is a pedestrian-friendly environment and a number of restaurants have outdoor seating areas.


As you’d expect in a college town, national brands have a strong presence, but there are enough one-of-a-kind restaurants near 1509 Hinman to satisfy almost every palate. And there are scores more a bit further afield in Evanston’s quirky neighborhoods.


You won’t find much of a club scene in Evanston, but you will find drinking establishments ranging from Bar Louie to Tommy Nevin’s within a few blocks of 1509 Hinman.

The Century 12 Cinemark movie theater is a 10-minute walk from 1509 Hinman. Evanston has a respectable live theatre scene.

A number of Evanston’s street festivals and outdoor concerts take place near 1509 Hinman

Parks, recreation. The location has good proximity to public parks and outdoor recreational areas.

Raymond Park, a few doors south of the building, has greenery and benches and not much more.

Evanston’s lakefront parks and public beaches are a few blocks east of the building.

Transportation. Residents of 1509 Hinman have reasonably good access to public transportation.

Metra’s North Line stop at Davis St less than a half-mile northwest of the building. The CTA Purple Line stop at Dempster St is a few blocks south of the building.

Several Northwestern shuttles stop near 1509 Hinman. The #205 CTA bus stops a block east of the building.

All of Evanston has relatively inconvenient access to Chicago’s airports and to I-90/94 and the expressway grid.

Both Enterprise and Zipcar have a car sharing location several blocks from the building. Taxi service can be readily summoned to the building
