The Judson is a 3-story, 19-unit vintage apartment building at 1243 Judson Ave in Evanston.

The apartments

1243 Judson has a mix of 2- and 3-bedroom apartments. Some of the apartments have a bath-and-a-half. Floor plans are available online.

The apartments have hardwood floors, crown moldings, ceiling fans and nice-sized living rooms with large windows and decorative fireplaces flanked by built-in bookcases.

Most of the apartments have a cozy sun room, and all have at least one balcony or porch.

Updated kitchens have space for an eat-in area, 42-inch upper cabinets, gas ranges, dishwashers and built-in microwaves. Kitchens have separate pantries, and open onto back porches. Many of the apartments have separate dining rooms.

Bedrooms have hardwood floors and good separation from public living areas. Baths have been refurbished. The apartments have excellent closet space.

Radiator heat is included in the rent.

Amenities, services, policies

1243 Judson, like almost all vintage buildings, has limited common-area amenities.

The building does have an amenity that’s very unusual: a large private rear patio with a basketball hoop.

The building has a laundry room with coin-operated equipment.

The building has bicycle storage and resident storage lockers.

Parking is not available on-site, but is usually easily available on the street. Cats are welcome; dogs are not.

The location

1243 Judson is at the corner of Judson and Dempster, just over a 5-minute walk from Burnham Shores Park and Lake Michigan.

Judson is a quiet, tree-lined predominantly single-family street. Dempster St is an interesting, pedestrian-friendly neighborhood with a number of one-of-a-kind shops and restaurants. Chiaravalle Montessori School is on Dempster, a half-block west of the building.

1243 Judson is about three-quarters of a mile from the Northwestern University campus.

Shopping. 1243 Judson has good proximity to grocery shopping.

Trader Joe’s and Jewel-Osco are on Chicago Ave, two blocks west and a block south of the building. Whole Foods is a block further south on Chicago Ave

Sea Ranch Fish Market is on Dempster, a block-and-a-half west of the building.

A stroll along Dempster takes you past an eclectic mix of resale, antique and specialty shops, salons and the unique pet store that some call “Evanston’s zoo.”

Dining, nightlife, entertainment. Dempster Street serves up a number of dining options you won’t find anywhere else.

Nearby restaurants include Blind Faith Café, which bills itself as “Chicago’s premier vegetarian restaurant,” Dozika, Siam Pasta and Wiener and Still Champion.

Coffee is a short walk away on Dempster at Bagel Art and Starbucks.

The popular SPACE is just south of Dempster on Chicago Ave. TimeOut Chicago’s Evanston City Guide recently ranked it as one of the best bars in Evanston.
.

Bar Louie and Tommy Nevin’s are a few blocks north of 1243 Judson.

Parks, recreation. The location has good access to public parks and outdoor recreation areas.

Evanston’s public beaches are two blocks east of the building.

Transportation. 1243 Judson has convenient access to the CTA Purple Line but relatively poor access to Metra stops and bus lines.

The CTA Purple Line stop at Dempster St is just over two blocks west of the building.

Metra’s North Line stop at Davis St is four blocks north and two blocks west of the building. The Metra stop at Main St is nearly a mile southwest.

All of Evanston has relatively inconvenient access to Chicago’s airports and to I-90/94 and the expressway grid.
