If you’re shopping for a home and you have young children, or plan to have children, you need to cast a trained eye at the floor plan of your castle-to-be.
When you’re house-hunting in those pristine new models or spiffed-up open houses, it’s tough to visualize the spatial nuances that can affect your daily routine. How far will I have to walk to check on the baby? Can I watch or hear the kids while I make dinner? How many can brush their teeth in the bathroom together in those 5 minutes before the school bus comes?
“So bring along this checklist and add it to your own requirements”, advises John Wozniak, president of J. Lawrence home builders. “With kids of my own, I know the value of an efficient floor plan, and we incorporate these features into our homes.”
- Play space – is it near the main living area?
- Kitchen island – is it big enough for multiple uses?
- Mudroom – is there a spot for backpacks, coats, boots, etc., to help curb clutter?
- Placement of bedrooms – are they close enough for comfort? Separated for privacy?
- Layout of baths – room to maneuver?
- Closet space – large enough for growing kids’ wardrobe?
- Flex space like a bonus room, loft or basement – will the home grow with your family?
- Kid-friendly community features – area parks and playgrounds? Swimming pool?
A little foresight during your home search can seriously improve your quality of family life in your new home.
