The Fisher Building City Club is a 20-story, 184-unit vintage apartment tower in Chicago’s Loop.
The D.H. Burnham & Company-designed building, a Chicago landmark, was built in 1896 and added to in 1906. The 20-story addition followed the style of the original 18-story building except for the classic bay windows.
The elaborate terra cotta ornamentation on the lower floors includes a variety of sea creatures and sea shells, in a playful reference to the name of the building’s owner, Lucius Fisher. Eagles and mythical beasts decorate the upper floors.
The Fisher Building was renovated and converted to residential apartments in 2002. Pappageorge Haymes was the architectural firm overseeing the renovation efforts.
The apartments
The unit mix includes 10 different studio, convertible, 1-, 2- and 3-bedroom floor plans.
Floor plans and near real-time availability information are accessible online.
The apartments have 10-foot ceilings, large windows and hardwood floors in living areas. Bay windows in a number of the units make the space feel more expansive. Some of the units have fireplaces and some have skylights. A 2-bedroom / 2-bath plan has an in-unit washer / dryer.
Kitchens have granite breakfast bars. Baths have oversized steeping tubs and some have stall showers in the second bath.
Views. East-facing high-floor units have a bit of a lake view, but the Fisher Building apartments generally don’t offer expansive views.
Amenities, services, policies
The Fisher Building has a good suite of amenities for a vintage building.
There’s a nice-sized resident lounge with a bar, a variety of seating areas and several gaming tables.
The fitness room has a variety of weight and cardio equipment.
The building also has a business center, a laundry room with DVD rentals, bicycle storage and individual storage lockers.
A Dollop Coffee outlet is on-site.
Management and maintenance are on-site, and the building has 24/7 door staff.
The Fisher Building does not have on-site parking, but spaces are available for rent at a number of nearby lots.
The location
The Fisher building has a convenient Loop location close to parks, transportation, shopping, schools and major attractions.
DePaul University’s Loop campus and John Marshall Law School are a block east of the building. A number of other colleges and universities are within a few blocks.
The Art Institute and Chicago Symphony are a 5-minute walk east of the Fisher Building, and the Loop’s theatre district is a few blocks north.
Shopping.
There are a number of convenience stores nearby. The closest full-service grocery is the Target at State and Madison, three blocks north of the building.
State Street shops, anchored by Macy’s, are within a few minutes’ walk of the building. The Shops at North Bridge, 50 stores and 20 restaurants anchored by Nordstrom, and other Magnificent Mile shops are a short bus ride away.
Dining, nightlife. There’s a wide array of dining and nightlife options near the Fisher Building, starting with the Plymouth Restaurant.
Many of the nearby restaurants cater to office workers and tourists. A number of Chicago classics, including The Berghoff, Miller’s Pub and Italian Village are within a block or two of the building
Buddy Guy’s Legends and Jazz Showcase are a few short blocks south of the building
Parks, recreation. Grant Park, Chicago’s 319-acre “front yard,” is a few blocks east of the Fisher Building.
Millennium Park, at the north end of Grant Park, is one of the most exciting and architecturally interesting public spaces in the country. Pritzker Park, a small plaza with a green space, is just east of the building.
Transportation. Public transportation is genuinely outstanding – rather ironic for a building in a great walk-to-work or school location.
The Fisher Building is within a block of six CTA train lines, and 3 short blocks from a seventh.
A large number of CTA bus routes criss-cross the area.
Congress Parkway, a block south of the building, provides quick access to I-90/94, I-290 and the rest of the city’s expressway grid.
