Foresight or folly in Chicago’s Chinatown?

Developer See Wong has reimagined an ambitious development he first proposed several years ago as a three-phase project on a site at the edge of Chicago’s Chinatown bordered by an elevated section of the Dan Ryan Expressway and the Orange Line tracks.

The first phase of the development would include retail and a 100+ unit condo building targeted for condo investors who would rent to students. Phase II and III contemplate a hotel, retail stores and a high-rise condo tower.

We wrote about the development several weeks ago. Urban Turf Chicago and the Sun-Times also wrote about it, and that prompted me to head to the site for a closer look, which you can see in the above video.

YoChicago visited Chinatown with developer See Wong almost four years ago today in the video below.

Wong plans to open a sales center for the project in about a month. YoChicago previously visited Wong at a sales center for 1349 S Wabash, a high-rise that never happened, despite claims that it was more than 70% sold. Watch the video:
