Former Humboldt Park stable could become landmark

A former stable now home to The Institute of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture could be designated a landmark.

We stopped by the Commission on Chicago Landmarks meeting last week and heard more about the gorgeous building, formerly the Humboldt Park Receptory Building and Stable.

Built from 1895 – 96 by Frommann and Jebsen, the two-story building, 3015 W Division St, is an architectural gem. It’s the oldest surviving building in Humboldt Park designed in the “old German style of country house architecture,” as noted at the meeting. Back in the day, the building housed horses, wagons and landscaping tools.

It features red pressed brick with a foundation of rusticated field stones and pink brick. The steep roofs are also striking.

While the interior of the building is being gutted, the Institute is located in a trailer next door, according to Jorge Felix, program director for the Institute.
