Former YoChicagoan a Solar Decathlon finalist

Valerie Zekas, a former YoChicago employee, is a member of The New School / Stevens Institute of Technology team that’s been selected as one of 20 finalists in the 2011 Solar Decathlon.

According to the US Department of Energy Solar Decathlon site, the “Solar Decathlon challenges 20 collegiate teams to design, build, and operate solar-powered houses that are affordable, energy-efficient, and attractive.”

The public will be able to view and visit the completed homes on the National Mall in Washington in summer 2011. Valerie’s team’s home will be taken over by Habitat for Humanity after the competition and built on a site in the Deanwood neighborhood in DC for occupancy by low-income residents.

Congratulations, young lady.
