Four Locomobile Lofts left in Chicago's motor row

loco lofts.jpgWhile we’re on the subject of lofts today…Four units remain for sale at Locomobile Lofts, located at 2000 S Michigan Ave in Chicago’s landmark Motor Row District. Developer The Lyonhart Group has a brief but interesting history of the place that produced the Locomobile (yes, that was a real car) on its Web site: “‘Automobile rows’ had developed in numerous cities shortly after the turn of the last century, as car companies sought to create districts where the sale and repair of cars could become an easy urban shopping experience.”

Chicago’s motor row was on South Michigan Avenue from 14th to 24th Streets, where the names Ford, Buick, Hudson, Premier and Locomobile are still found etched in the old brick and terra-cotta buildings.

The three-story former home of the Locomobile now houses 33 loft condos with one to three bedrooms and 725 to 2,750 square feet. Prices start in the $180s. Units have concrete ceilings, exposed columns and beams and exposed ductwork. The building also has an exercise room and heated garage parking for your old runabout.
