Golfer's loss, renter's gain

The golfer’s loss apparently is the renter’s gain at Lakeshore East, a new downtown development where the 46-story Shoreham apartment tower recently was topped off. Developers Magellan Development Group and Near North Properties are building the mixed-use Lakeshore East community, planned for nearly 5,000 new homes, on the former site of the nine-hole golf course at the Chicago River and Lake Shore Drive.

The Shoreham, 400 E. South Water, begins leasing in February and has 548 apartments slated for April move-ins.

No luxury was spared for these apartments, www.TheShoreham.com. The “Shore Club” is a private floor featuring a “sky garden lounge,” a business center, a party suite with a kitchen, a billiards room and a café. Residents also have access to a spa with a fitness center, two whirlpools, sauna and steam rooms, a massage area, an outdoor pool and a landscaped terrace that includes a poolside deck and barbecue area.

The building, designed by Loewenberg & Associates, also includes 11,000 square feet of retail and public parking for 373 cars.

The Lancaster, a 29-story condo building at Lakeshore East, saw its first move-ins in December. The Regatta, a 44-story condo tower overlooking the river at Wacker and Harbor, and 340 on the Park, a 62-story condo highrise overlooking Grant Park, are scheduled to start construction in 2005.
