How is this appropriate for this development website and discussion? Why do you give idiots like this any exposure, as there is plenty of these thugs like this shown everyday in rap videos on MTV? This has taken Yo-Chicago to a new low, especially after claiming the necessary clean-up of the site with spam filter.

There’s no doubt that the video is disgusting.
I posted it to provide some balance to the relentlessly upbeat view of Pilsen – an area that’s seen some new construction – that’s presented by the real estate industry.
Perhaps this was the wrong way to achieve that balance. Let’s let more voices weigh in on the subject.
Well, on the positive, you have highlighted an example of the great combination of responsible parenting, the current Chicago Public School system, and the advantages of Chicago being an immigration safe-haven. Future leaders!

Similar types of downwardly mobile gangbangers lived in Lincoln Park well into the 80’s. Neighborhoods change and as much as these guys “preen” about their territory they eventually move on. Likely to life sentences in prison or the graveyard.
I recall one particularly stupid “writer” over at Chicagoist lament the “whitewashing” of East Pilsen. I guess to him this guy is keeping it “real”.
Seems to me all areas would be happy to get rid of idiots like this guy. Makes me think of the “Escape from New York” series. Put all the idiots on an island, surround it with heavy weapons, and let them kill each other.
The worst thing about guys like this and gangs in general are the innocents who get hurt. Young mother one day, 15 year old another, 6 year old kid shot in Humboldt Park the other day.
As for whether it should be posted here. Sure why not. What does it bring? I dunno. Kinda interesting though.

Good point on the downwardly mobile stuff. This guy is proud to “run” “County”.???! By that he means the lovely correctional facility at 26th and California. I suspect his life expectancy is below average.
As for the different name I need to check how I “post” something after every time I “clean” my computer. I picked up some goofy “adware” last week and have been running various programs to make sure it doesn’t return. I suspect my nephew who was over helping me do some work overloaded my computer with porn. Ah, to be 14 again. His evil mom, my sister, has some adult spyware on his computer. Here he figured he was free to engage his perverse curiousity and drink my Guinness.
Imagonna have fun next time I see him. Watch him sweat it out wondering whether I will tell. I think my basement needs to be cleaned with a shop vac!
After watching this and some of the other videos, I am almost ready to move to Wilmette! (almost) Let others “keep it real”, I would rather be able to sleep at night without gunshots and screaming. Another example of why my parents retired to New Zealand.

you may not have seen “Once Were Warriors” which gives a disturbing view of one small aspect of New Zealand life.
That kind of stupidity exists almost everywhere. Just a matter of degree.
I have to say I’m impressed this guy (or his friends) could figure out how to post something on YouTube. I think it’s great the Joe posted it. Agents are so eager to label an area as “up and coming” and say things like, “Well, everyone’s definition of ‘safe’ is different, so I really can’t say if this area is safe.” Or my personal favorite, “Crime can happen anywhere, you know.” I realize there are a lot of legal limitations on what agents can say, but is it really that difficult for agents to just have some statistics to offer? Why can’t they just say, “Well, you know, this neighborhood averages about 2 murders a month, whereas the other neighborhood you were considering averages about 1 murder per year.” Personally, I think it’s unethical NOT to make your clients aware of what they’re getting themselves into when they’re looking at areas that are still rife with gang activity–especially if they’re new to the area…and I think there must be ways to help buyers get the facts without violating some type of anti-discrimination laws.

I recommend people visit ChicagoCrime and similar sites for accurate info about neighborhood crimes.

To inform some of this gang gibberish — The “Satan’s Disciples” (SD’s) have a 25-year history as a predominantly Hispanic gang originating from Chicago. The Satan’s Disciples gang is believed to have been started in the 1960’s in the Pilsen neighborhood. The SDs have, admittedly, been active in that area and the rest of the nearwest side and near southside neighborhoods. (From the National Gang Crime Research Center).
Is 18th & Oakley even in Pilsen? I always thought of that as Heart of Chicago.

You raise a good point. Depending on whose boundaries you’re using 18th & O is in either Heart of Chicago or Pilsen.
Heart of Chicago is probably the more accurate choice – but this dude identified himself as “Pilsen’s finest” in the video.
It’s in that gray area that’s either west Pilsen or west OF Pilsen, but either way, new developments are concentrated way east of there, between Ashland and Halsted. Like Logan Square or Humboldt Park, safety in Pilsen is a block-by-block affair; ten years ago it was solid gang country east of Ashland, but now that area is quiet. I don’t think that has anything to do with the new folks but rather the efforts of longtime residents.
Joe, I wish you would be a little more fair in your portrayal of certain neighborhoods. North Siders are prone to recognizing fine gradations in neighborhoods like, say, Edgewater, while lumping broad areas of the West or South Sides together. You are not likely to run into this guy outside the Jumping Bean; he can probably talk tough because he rarely actually runs into gentrifiers. The most I’ve seen of his kind in the part of the neighborhood that you’re talking about is lame, desperate tagging runs. They own Pilsen like Taiwan owns China.

I just wonder if someone calling themselves “Pilsen’s finest” understands they are essentially comparing themselves to Pilsner Urquelle.
I used to live next to a guy just like this in the “nice” part of Wicker Park. He had a shaved head, lots of tatoos, and liked to sit on the front stoop shirtless with a bunch of other thugs. It was one of two open-air drug markets on the block, which also featured million dollar homes. I had to move to the relative safety of Uptown to get away from that crap!
Funny. Zekas loves negating Pilsen and the positive change going on while lauding hell and gone Rogers Park. Change is incremental and very slow, even slower given the current market, but Pilsen like many other areas with close proximity to the center continues to improve. If one doesn’t live here you just don’t get an idea of the socio economic status of the folks buying the small number of buildings that sell> Pilsen is very small. Smaller than you think. It has changed so much up and down the residential streets even though outsiders cannot see it.
