Housing bubble hiss: teardowns slowing in Hinsdale

A slowing real estate market resulted in 56 demolition permits for houses in Hinsdale during the first nine months of 2006, according to a story in today’s Chicago Tribune, compared to 118 teardowns for the suburb during the previous year. Why has Hinsdale become a hotbed of teardowns and ginormous new homes? “It’s a place where kids can walk to a store and get a Slurpee,” builder Jim McMahon, who’s constructing a $5 million house there, told the Trib. For those on tight budgets, you can pick up a frozen drink machine with five cases of mix, two jugs and five flavor labels at Steve’s Frozen Chillers Web site for $1,799, a small fraction of one mortgage payment on a $5 million house.
