How do you evict a no-good roommate?

A few folks on craigslist have been debating the best way to evict freeloading roommates in forums here and here. One person thinks his booted roommate later burgled him, and another warns that there are legal steps that you must follow to get rid of a roommate. Everyone agrees that there’s no way to do it without creating tension. Lots of it.

Yeah, I’ll never forget the day my new roommate told me point-blank, “I just hate living here and I hate living with you.” No amount of negotiation or compromise was going to fix that awful situation. When both of you are on the lease, you’re often stuck suffering out the remainder of the year or finding someone to take over your part of the lease.

But what if you’re the only name on the dotted line and your roommate stops paying the bills? Or stops washing dishes? Or won’t keep his stinky fingers off your food in the fridge? How do you deliver the news and what do you do while he’s packing his bags?
Have a horror story of kicking out a no-good roommate? Were you the one booted out (wrongfully, we’re sure)? Drop us a line and let Yo know.
