According to the listing copy, the 7,000+ square foot ranch at 390 N East River Rd in Des Plaines is a “unique design that Frank Lloyd Wright would admire.” The living room has a “wall of mable” flanking the fireplace. From the photo, it certainly doesn’t appear to be marble:

“Always wanted to be in Architectural Digest? Here’s your ticket” boasts the listing.

The home, unsurprisingly, has been on the market for over two years. Perhaps not enough Frank Lloyd Wright fans who are Architectural Digest wannabes want to live in Des Plaines.

  • While the decor is certainly dreadful, your comment that the the wall “certainly doesn’t appear to be marble” is a little off the mark.

In fact, it most certainly appears to be marble, it just happens to be a rough hewn marble brick veneer.

If you’ve ever seen the slightly sparkling white gravel that decorates many a mid-century suburban garden then you’ve seen this type of stone before which is a type of marble, albeit an inexpensive type.

  • I don’t know how you can determine that with such confidence from the photo alone.

  • I could say the same of your comment, Joe. πŸ™‚

  • Your point is valid, but I expressed doubt while you expressed certainty.

  • I.WANT.THIS.HOUSE! That space looks very rat pack – was this, perchance, owned by a mobster?

  • Anthony & Joe:
You’re dead on Anthony! That is exactly what I was thinking – rough hewn. Joe – consider all possible alternatives to the run of the mill marble you see on bathroom floors before you make a comment πŸ™‚
Would be fun to tour as well as ask previous owner why so many dining tables and chairs? Odd.

  • Back in my days as a builder one of my model units had a fireplace surround of rough-hewn / rusticated marble, so I was aware of the possibility that this was marble.
