Incredible opportunity – to buy illegal rental

We just saw an ad on Craigslist for a “completely renovated home with rental garden unit” at 5720 W. Patterson, in Portage Park. The headline calls it an “incredible opportunity.”

It’s for sale by owner, and offered at $423,000. Just one caveat: the property is zoned RS-2 (a classification that doesn’t allow a rental unit), and it’s listed by the Cook County Assessor as a single family.

Back in the day, illegal conversions were a plague in Portage Park and other northwest side neighborhoods. Is this an isolated instance, or part of a continuing problem?
