Meet Cory Jones. He spends his nights as a Chicago policeman in the tough Fifth District. During a part of his days, he’s a real estate developer.
Cory was inspired by the renovation — some would call it gentrification — of a North Kenwood block he passed daily on the way to Roosevelt University, where he majored in accounting.
If you’re impressed, as we were, by his sweetness and his values, you’ll want to watch the remaining three parts of our interview with Cory, who’s completing the renovation of a 6-flat at 4314 S. Vincennes Ave in North Kenwood / Bronzeville.
Jones talks about who’s moving to Bronzeville, the changes he’s seen in the neighborhood, and takes us on a tour of one of the units at his vintage restoration.

What the heck is going on here?
There really are no 2 sides to any issue with the Holy Father Joe Zekas, are there? Has this website completely devolved into a soundboard for your personal biases now, Joe?
So you take a college-educated black man from the south side to make your point? I guess that solves it, discussion closed. Gentrification is good for all because this dude above made the right choices and benefited. Thanks for more of your enlightening “facts”, buddy.
The funny thing is, I actually agree with you that the ‘victimization’ due to gentrification is overplayed by the media. But this semi-propaganda machine you have running over here is beginning to give me nightmares. It’s akin to Republicans putting a well-educated black man in a position of power in their party just to demonstrate to the world that they genuinely ‘care’ (holding back tears over here) about America’s other half.
Get outta here with all that. Go back to what you used to do best Zekas–show us pictures of developments, interview some more relevant people (developers, architects, etc), and shine your Holy Wisdom on somebody else.
up,
No two sides to any issue here?
Aren’t you presenting yours? Isn’t everyone who reads this free to present theirs? If anything, you seem to be the one arguing for a one-sided approach.
Interview some more relevant people? You’re goiing to have to explaini to me how an African-American developer is irrelevant, because that point’s beyond my feeble ability to grasp.
Show you pictures of developments? Isn’t this one? Have we stopped doing that?
We’re out here trying to show you Chicago. There’s no other agenda.
Joe, a great piece of work and interview. It goes to show the smaller and personal side of development, as well as highlighting an unbelievably understated development of the South Side. Even those in the South Loop, who have seen the incredible amount of development, should take a ride around south of I-55 through the University of Chicago. Amazing start.
UP,
are you off your meds? I suggest a nice Guinness with a Prozac chaser.
This was an interesting interview.
